Inge Stevenson, spiritual teacher and trauma therapist, talks a little about SE, how to recognize trauma, and how to move through and beyond traumatic states.
SE – SOMATIC EXPERIENCING is a body-oriented method for trauma. The starting point is the physical impact of shock, especially to the nervous system.
With small shocks we release the voltage in the moment, but with more sever shocks or repetitive shocks, the ability to release the voltage is impaired. This can lead to a state of constant vigilance, high muscle tone and a ‘built’ diaphragm, causing shallow breathing. The result can be persistent fatigue, stress and/or a ‘short fuse’ (highly reactive behavior). Response Patterns are always activated by new shocks or reminders of the ‘old’ incident.
